Dave Baxter
It Takes a Village: Chapter One
By Mark Lannon
The guys were all hanging out one warm Redondo Beach evening. There were only a few of us and we all around 15 or 16 years old. Someone said, “let’s get some beer.” Well, the liquor store in town should have been shut down for age violations, so that’s where we started. With the beer in hand, a few bottles were opened. Most of the guys were getting a buzz, but not Dave. He went a little too far, ok, he got wasted. Thank God his girlfriend wasn’t there. She did not like him drinking or hanging out with us and we certainly weren’t fond of her. In our little teenage minds something had to give with that relationship. After a short debate we agreed on a plot that would change Dave’s current course. One of the guys that didn’t drink much agreed to drive. The next task was to get Dave in the car. We had to be careful because he looked like he was going to get extremely sick. We poured him into the back seat and drove quietly to his girlfriends home. We carefully removed him from the car and deposited him on their front lawn. It was an upscale neighborhood, and as we drove away we may have honked the horn a few times. Her parents came outside as we disappeared down the road into the night. Dave never saw that girl again so our job was done. Sometime later, Davie Dawg met someone named Jan. We all had a great time and well, I guess you know the rest of the story… Best Wishes to The Baxter Family
