Newport to Ensenada Regatta

By Douglas Ewins

All good stories start out with "So we were drinking some beers and.....", well this story is one of those. Dave, Scott Goodrich and I were in Newport Harbor the day before the Newport to Ensenada Race and we took some beers and went for a dingy ride around the harbor. After an hour or so we were running low on beers and gas so we stopped at the fuel dock to replenish supplies.

While Scott and I filled the gas can and Dave went in to pick up another 12 pack, a Harbor Patrol boat piloted by a female patrol officer cruised up to the dock and called out to us: "You don't have any CF numbers on that dingy". Scott then started to explain to the officer that we were from Santa Barbara and it was not our dingy and yada, yada, yada when she said "Well even in Santa Barbara ya gotta have CF numbers".

About that time Dave came out of the store with the beer and Scott shot back at the officer: "Well why don't you muff me or cuff me".

Needless to say, I fell down on the dock laughing hysterically while Dave proceeded to apologize profusely for our obviously intoxicated friend. Don't ask me how but that silver tongued devil David talked the officer into not arresting us for intoxication while operating a motor vessel, not having CF numbers and for being ASS HOLES. From that day on, whenever Dave and I would get together part of our greeting to each other was: "Why don't you Muff me or Cuff me."
